Not every research program has an origin story.
The year was 2017, we were halfway through our field season at Piedras Negras, Guatemala. Our field camp was located just about as far from “civilization” as we could get - a four hour boat ride to the nearest town, a four hour truck ride to the nearest urban center, and a two hour flight to Guatemala City. Our only form of communication was a satellite phone that we turned on for half an hour every day that only worked about 50% of the time. And of course, I had a medical emergency.
This is the route I took to get to a dentist.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do. Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it.
